Last week, the Sunday Times published an article about the independence of non-executive directors written by Carly Chynoweth. This was based on a Genius Methods panel debate evening that the Carly attended with us in October. Part of our monthly Corporate Governance panel debate series, the evening addressed the benefits and risks of NED independence. Genius wrote a White Paper which summarises the whole debate – read here. Our panel of experts shared a range of perspectives on the qualities of independence, what independence means, the role of the chair, international models of governance, NED remuneration and the possible downsides of complete independence. A recent article featuring Bob Garratt, one of our esteemed panel, reflects on the issue of dividing non-executives from executives by name when they have the same duties. We are looking forward to our next Corporate Governance Panel Debate evening which is being held on February 26, 2013 on the topic of NED Remuneration.
